Toshiba Satellite M505D-S4000 TruBrite 14.0-Inch Laptop (Black) Buy Now

Whatever you do, don't send this notebook or any Toshiba notebook to their repair depot. My function keys failed to work out of the box. After spending months intermittently trying to fix them via Toshiba phone support and their web site, I sent it into their repair depot with the assurance that it would take 7-10 days to repair. That was two months ago. I talked with a "customer relations" representative who told me that my only option was to wait however long it took for the repair - if it took forever, well so be it. Now I've learned that it will be in the repair facility for at least another month! That's three months on a repair that was supposed to take 7-10 days. So what's the difference between this kind of confiscation and theft? I feel as though my notebook has been stolen.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite M505D-S4000 TruBrite 14.0-Inch Laptop (Black).

Apple MacBook MC240LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop Order Now

A lot of this model have defective Samsung LCD panel in it.

[...]

I got one. And it is such a hassle to have Apple to repair or replace it for you.
I already tried to repair twice, every time they return still defective. And they won't replace it for me. Horrible customer service and quality control.

Horrible. Stay away. I know this is already the last generation, but still, stay as far away from this computer as possible.Get more detail about Apple MacBook MC240LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop.

Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980 18.4" Notebook (2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T6600 6GB RAM 500GB HDD Blu-ray Read Only Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) Right now

I wanted a large screen laptop that I could use around the house. This computer satisfied my requirement. The screen is very large and sharp. My best photos come up large and crisp. Beautiful colors. The speakers are wonderful and were an unexpected surprise. It is like wearing a good set of earphones. The computer is silent. I do not hear the fans or drive. It is very fast.

I did not like the style in the store (Best Buy) since it is shiny black and I prefer a flat finish. But once I got it home I realized it is very smart, modernistic. My wife who is picky on such matters remarked that it is beautiful. The keys are flat like minature tiles but this is ok with me and I would prefer if the function keys were set somewhat lower. It smudges but you only see this in direct light and it wipes off anyway.

I would not buy this computer for travelling due to its size. But as a home laptop it is great. I am very happy with my choice.

Low Price Lenovo Thinkpad T500 15.4-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro)

I purchased a new thinkpad with accessories all of which were back ordered. I had problems with setting up the home network in the Windows 7 system. I called their service and they denied the warranty I had just paid for. Their order status web site is always down. The 866 order status phone based system is a bunch of barely English speaking people who also do not have server access. My accessories are on a never ending delay (up to three months now). I bought Adobe Creative Suite Windows ED not knowing that ED did not mean edition but meant "educational". I did not get a serial number and could not activate the software. To return it cost me $50! Never again will I order a Lenovo.Get more detail about Lenovo Thinkpad T500 15.4-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro).

Discount HP Pavilion DV4-1547SB 14.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 4.25 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Professional)

We received our HP Pavililion DV4-1547SB about a month ago. At the same time we got the computer we bought an extended battery. One of the first things we did when we gor the computer is use the camera to see our great grandson who was about a week old and hear his cooing. We live in Kalamazoo, Michigan and our great grandson lives in Ottowas, Canada. What a thrill for my wife and I to enjoy this technology. The picture and sound were so clear. And of course, our grandson and his wife could also see us through the unboard camera located in the cover of this computer.

The computer is fast with the use of Windows 7, and by using PDF, I was able to send my Christmas with all its graphics by email to many friends and relatives. This got my message out guickly and without the cost of postage.

My wife sits down with the computer on her lap to play games and send emails. I use the computer to write articles. I use both Word and Word Perfect for my word processing.

I am 77 years old and my wife is 79, and we find this computer easy to use and fast. We looked up the manual on the internet, copied it, punched holes in the edge of the manual and placed iit in a notebook, so we can read up on any fine points we need to learn how to navigate.

Cheap HP G60-549DX Laptop Notebook - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2.1GHz / 4GB DDR2 / 250GB HD / 15.6" LCD / Built-in webcam with microphone / Windows 7 Home Premium

This is our second HP laptop after a series of HP desktops and current HP printers. Cannot say anything bad about them. I mean I bought the machine knowing its capacities and was not disapointed. Quality of build is good, we've had the CQ 50 139NR for over a year now, it is solid and doesn't come apart with steady use. Outside of more battery life, always want more, we have seen good products from HP. After 8 years we finally just scrapped an HP printer that wouldn't quit. On our Compaq Desktop (made by HP) I thought I needed service, (my bad) and they answered the phone quickly, and were able to remotely access my machine and then took care of everything, I just chatted with the guy over the phone as he cleaned up the mess I made with the software. Then the next day, HP service calls me just to ask if everything is working fine on my machine. A++ service too! I like HP, as long as they keep making good stuff and you can get their products at affordable prices!Get more detail about HP G60-549DX Laptop Notebook - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2.1GHz / 4GB DDR2 / 250GB HD / 15.6" LCD / Built-in webcam with microphone / Windows 7 Home Premium.

Buying Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life

This is an excellent laptop for the money! They sell one exactly like this one for about $120 to $150 more with Windows7; don't waste your money on that because you can get a FREE UPGRADE to Windows7 if you purchase it before Jan 31, 2010! The mousepad special features perform wonderfully and accurately. The mousepad is positioned in just the right place and has just the right amount of sensitivity for tapping. The battery does not last quite the 8 hours - more like 6 - but then again, I did not do the battery conditioning at first like you're supposed to ... I wish I did ... that probably makes the difference. This laptop freezes up whenever coming out of sleep mode ... I don't know for sure, but I think it might be a Vista issue ... I guess I'll find out soon enough as my Windows7 should arrive shortly. The computer performs beautifully, except for the aforementioned (as long as I don't let it enter sleepmode, I have no performance issues). One more thing, the sound (set at 100%) is very low when you play a dvd movie. I can't find any settings to adjust or change it, so I have to hook up speakers.Get more detail about Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life.

Purchase Asus K50IJ-RX05 Refurbished Notbooke PC

I bought this laptop because my previous Compaq was dropped and broke. My new Asus was reviewed well when I researched it and I agree! The best thing about the laptop is that it is fast and has a bright screen. It even has a number keypad on the side which is wonderful. The only problem I have is that the facial recognition software isn't perfect. This software allows the webcam to log you on instead of entering your password. It does work but you have to take a lot of sample pictures and have really good lighting. Overall a really good laptop.Get more detail about Asus K50IJ-RX05 Refurbished Notbooke PC.

Order Sony VAIO VGN-NW240F/P 15.5-Inch Pink Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

After months of misery trying to adjust to a Toshiba (annoying track pad, cumbersome double-clicking system, slow noisy start-up, highly unstable environment with spontaneous crashes, permanent sleeping sickness (unable to awake from sleep mode) etc, etc.) I ante'd up a few dollars for this machine. A wonderful change for the better. The keys and track pad are great, the machine was easy to set up and so far, two weeks in, everything is great. Two thumbs up for the affordable VAIO. BTW: the 'pink' is a really nice muted color, and $35 cheaper to boot.Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-NW240F/P 15.5-Inch Pink Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Where To Buy Sony VAIO VGN-AW420F/H 18.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I pre-ordered this laptop through Amazon so I could avoid the upgrade path of buying a laptop with vista and needing to hassle with the free upgrade. So I was waiting 3 weeks and anticipating having a cool huge beautiful spiffy computer. It is all that, but with that said, the windows 7 home premium is stripped down so i cant setup machinee to network with my work/office network and printers. So I had to buy a freaking anytime upgrade for 89.99 to get enterprise functionality. BS! I also learned that if you want language functionality you need to anytime upgrade to 7 ultimate. ALSO, problem with internet explorer 8 working with windows 7. I couldn't get my outlook to work right when attempting to launch a browser session from within outlook, clicking on an embedded link. After spending 3 hours with a knowledgeable friend trying to edit the registry settings, gave up and installed mozilla firefox.

The laptop is a desktop replacement so it eats battery life! great multmedia machine, quite impressive when pulling it out for clients for powerpoint show. The best thing I like so far is that I can zoom my browser session to 150% and dont need to use reading glasses when on-line and don't need to scroll sideways on the bottom scroll bar to see the whole web link or document.

I am not happy with Microsoft not doing the development work ahead of time and not being told ahead of time that the windows 7 home premium is really lame and offer me a reduced price upgrade path when i ordered the laptop. They should offer a $50 adder to get windows 7 professional and $100 for the ultimate version. Get more detail about Sony VAIO VGN-AW420F/H 18.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Shop For HP - Pavilion Laptop DV7-3085DX 17.3" LED Wide Screen 6GB Ram, 500GB HDD

Just got this model for Christmas. There are veriations of this model along with different prices. It's a bit more expensive than most computers that will do similiar functions, with only the exception of having a core i7 processor (quad core). All the other computers that had i7 were way over priced built for gaming, but from that prespective, it's actually one of the cheaper ones if that'll be your primary use or want to have it as an option. On appearance, its black sleek look is very impressive. You'll have to get the customized version from hp.com if that's not your taste. The widescreen looks great that's nice for watching movies. The sound is pretty impressive too...lots better than most laptops, complete with sub and all. Windows 7 is sweet; so far opening programs fast and running it smooth. The side number keys are a plus too. I gave it s 4/5 because for the price I think they could've added more; like a blu-ray drive, 8GB RAM instead of just 6GB, a TV-tuner would also make it a total power house. The spec say it weights 7.7 lbs, but it feels more like 10 lbs. The heat vent felt pretty hot on the ones displayed in the store, but that may be because it had been left on all day. Currently it feels a little warmer than other non-high performing laptops, but not too bad. I'm thinking that may be an issue in the future, that's why you should get an extended warranty on it from hp.com. It's expensive, but well worth the investment...just calculated it into your total cost! Overall it's still a very cool laptop and I would highly recommend it.Get more detail about HP - Pavilion Laptop DV7-3085DX 17.3" LED Wide Screen 6GB Ram, 500GB HDD.

Viliv Promotion Pack X70EX EXP P 7-Inch Net-Tablet PC

not having the patience to wait for the rumored apple tablet computer i decided to give the villiv a try as the specs were not bad. first off, the build quality seems to be pretty high. very sold, and somewhat heavy, feel to it. not the kind of device that you will hold in one hand while reading etc. definitely not a 'kindle'.

variety of ports is good, a full size usb port is included. only thing missing is ethernet. the real thing holding this device back is the software. in this age shipping a touch screen tablet computer with windows XP is just plain silly. xp is already outdated as it is, but try running it on such a tiny screen and its an exercise in frustration. sure, with the stylus you can hit keys pretty accurately but thats not what a touch screen should be about in 2009. i felt like a chicken pecking at corn. and of course, no gestures like zooming or scrolling as with an itouch. the qube interface is cute but hardly enough. you constantly have to jump to xp to have any real stuff done.

the main reason why i got this device was for its gps capability. unfortunately i could not get this to work. neither with ms streets and trips nor garmin mobile pc. not once did any software get a link to a satellite. probably just defective. but at least villiv should have included a utility for checking out the gps module. instead there was only one puny app to change the baud rate.

as for speed, the villiv not not disappoint in this area. pretty responsive for such a small machine. one word of caution, DO NOT GET THE 16GB VERSION. you are only left with something like 4GB for your own stuff. rest is used by the system (xp, hidden restore partition, etc). also do not password protect your account. you will not be able to logon from the welcome screen as the soft keyboard cannot be brought up at this point. (had to hook up a usb keyboard. image this happens while traveling. villiv, are you listening?)

in conclusion, if you need a mobile device that runs full fledged windows xp the villiv might just be the gadget for you. Get more detail about Viliv Promotion Pack X70EX EXP P 7-Inch Net-Tablet PC.

HP ProBook 5310m - Core 2 Duo SP9300 / 2.26 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 320 GB - GMA 4500MHD - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft 2.0), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR - Windows 7 Pro / XP Pro downgrade - 13.3" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - camera - Smart Buy Review

I received one of these some time ago for our new shipping department. I have since put it through its steps and tested the win xp pro installation and the win 7 pro installation. It currently has win 7 pro on it. Here are my impressions of this business class/owner/user laptop.

****

Good:

1. Keyboard. What a lovely thing to type on! (However see the spacebar con listed below.) Possibly the nicest thing I have typed on since my IBM T42p.
2. Pleasing external aesthetic build. HP did a good job on this one imo....
3. Battery life. Come on - a 4 cell battery giving me 6 1/2 hours of word processing time? Great! Lets see what an 8, or even a 12 cell could do!
4. Speed and functionality. For the simple to medium level tasks I do this machine is completely adequate.
5. Trackpad and Mouse buttons. Also very serviceable indeed. For some reason I really like the Mouse Buttons. Not sure why....
6. Bluetooth and Wireless N. Always nice to have a machine with both.
7. Win XP Pro and Win 7 Pro. This is the ideal combination of OS offerings on a laptop for my situation.
8. Bang for the buck. I purchased the machine for about $970 after tax and shipping. I have been quite satisfied with it thus far.
9. Single screen hinge design. A personal favorite design wise for me.

****

Cons:

1. The main negative for this laptop I have come across is the spacebar. It is fine, but I myself have had problems getting it to register my typing with it. From what I hear this is an early issue, and that later laptops of this model do not have the same issue. There is also an unofficial fix for it (somewhat involved, and which users may not feel comfortable doing). Still - to me this was a discouraging design flaw imo.
2. Fingerprint magnet. *sigh* (More of an aesthetic complaint on my part, though.)

****

Middle of the Road things.

1. Hard drive noise. As others have noted every once in a while the hard drive sounds exceptionally loud - almost as if in fits and starts - and you can feel the machine vibrating every so slightly.
2. No optical drive. This should not be too much of an issue for business users who sometimes can simply hook up to a deployment server, but it still is nice to have as an option. It would not be too difficult to ship an external drive with the laptop proper imo, and would be helpful.
3. Low profile machine/heat issues. Personally I would have liked it if the HP somehow stood higher up for heat and air distribution. I have not had noticeable heat problems thus far - but it is a sort of general principle I prefer.
4. Single slot for Ram. Hmph ... two would have been preferable. Still - it functions quite nicely in both win xp pro and win 7 pro with 2gb.... This means upgrades in Ram will be expensive for the time being.

****

All in all this is an amazing machine. And if indeed the spacebar flaw was quickly fixed it is an absolute steal for the price it sells for. I am very much looking forward to seeing how well it will function battery life wise with a 6, 8 or even 12 cell battery!

If I could I would have given this machine 4 1/2 stars.Get more detail about HP ProBook 5310m - Core 2 Duo SP9300 / 2.26 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 320 GB - GMA 4500MHD - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft 2.0), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR - Windows 7 Pro / XP Pro downgrade - 13.3" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - camera - Smart Buy.

Dell Latitude D610 Notebook PC (Intel Pentium M 1.86GHz, Windows XP Professional, 512MB DDR2, 40GB HDD, DVD/CDRW Combo) Best Quality

I bought one of these laptops two months ago. It has been working just fine. Today Microsoft told me that the license is not valid. It has a valid certificate of authenticity on the back but does not have a second "refurbished" CoA. When I look at the internal System Properties/General tab it says "XP Corporate" which means it was covered under a mass/site license which can not be transferred or sold. I will probably have to buy a fresh copy of XP ($100) and re-install.

Before I made the order I checked to see that the advertisement specified "Genuine Windows XP". I also checked the CoA when it arrived. When the Microsoft updater offered to run "Genuine Advantage" to check the authenticity I confidently thought "sure, go right ahead."

Toshiba Satellite T135-S1310WH TruBrite 13.3-Inch Ultrathin Black/White Laptop - 9 Hours 22 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Get it now!

Just received it yesterday. Was the quickest easiest setup I've ever had to do.

Even on the first full charge and nearly constant use. I can;t wear it out. I haven't stopped playing on it except to sleep. It's fast, light, powerful and good looking. I upgraded another (larger) laptop with Win 7 Home. I liked it a lot. This one with the factory loaded version. I like even better.

This just may have my favorite keyboard ever. The whole thing is just great. Well, with one exception. But then I already knew about it. The sound. I sure wish they had put it on top instead of underneath. Not a real problem for me. I prefer using headphones anyhow. I like the built in mouse pad. But again prefer my wireless mouse.

I just didn't think those two little things were enough to knock a star off. I also knew there wasn't an optical drive. I've got a USB cd/dvd hardrive so that's not an issue either. Wasn't sure if I would really like the white. I do though. It's not milk white and the pattern I find interesting.

Especially appreciated there not being a ton of software to remove. That hasn't been the case with any other computer I've owned. Gotta stop rambling here. Oh, the screen is great too. I tied the eco mode. Didn't hate it but am using equal setting and still get plenty of battery time. I purchased this laptop a month ago and i can tell you that it excellent buy for the price. Windows 7 IS GREAT. Direct Web option by SONY is such a great bonus. no worries of switching the laptop on/off. Within 10 secs you are connected to web and switch off at the same fast pace. The LCD clarity is stunning. Not to forget , BLU-RAY Player in-built plays movies awesomely. Yeah the only downside is Direct WEB option does not provide brightness adjustment and Battery life is 2.5 hrs only. like the others i was sold on the low price and considerable amount of ram, both on the graphic end and the computing end. i find it difficult to multitask on this computer. definitely not designed for windows 7. i can imagine this computer being a lot faster running either 32 bit xp or 64 bit xp. freezes up when i play around w/ windows media player so i dont use it. great for my games. lags sometimes though which is a bit disheartening. the audio driver or the actual device crackles when i raise and lower the volume manually. cant record my guitar into my digital audio workstation without lag or crackles in my recording so i dont bother with that either anymore which is rather depressing. photoshop runs a little slow. i guess what im trying to say is that if youre looking for a decent computer for basic computing needs then this is for you. i guess i shouldve waited though until i could afford something with a little more power. ah well. im not entirely dissapointed. i like it. its sleek. the screen is crystal clear. internal wireless network adapter picks up connections even if theyre just barely in range and the touch pad is very good compared to other laptops ive used. cant ask for a better computer for the price.Get more detail about Acer Aspire AS5532-5535 Laptop Notebook - 15.6" LCD / AMD Athlon TF-20 1.6GHz / 3GB DDR2 / 160GB HD / DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

HP Pavilion DV6-2170US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Decide Now

If you are looking at the DV6 line of notebooks you may have noticed that there are several new models out with model numbers like "DV6-21xx". These are basically the same notebook as the previous models with a new CPU/graphics combo that greatly improves performance. Like the previous DV6 generation it is well constructed with a metallic toned black exterior (HP also offers versions in white). Take a good look at the shell art since it is something that may not appeal to everyone. I bought mine for my mother-in-law and she definitely appreciated having something a little more individual than the usual dull grey exterior. Despite the glossy exterior we haven't noticed much in the way of finger prints or any scratches despite the helping hands of our kids who love to "help" grandma with her computer.

The specs for this model are set well above what the average home owner needs today which (in my mind) future proofs it nicely. If you are on a tight budget you can get what you need for less (look at the HP Pavilion G60 line). If you have a little bit more to spend and you want some headroom to handle your computing needs for the next few years this is a great choice.

CPU - This is one of the first models from HP that sports Intel's new "Core i5" line of CPUs. The short version is that it outperforms the older "Core2" chips and is slightly better than the (also) new "Core i3" chips. As noted in the description it's 2.26GHz part that can "Turbo Boost" up to 2.53GHz. What isn't mentioned is that this is a dual core part with 3MB of cache. That may sound a lot like the old Core2 chips but don't be fooled: this chip will outperform the old Core2 by 20%-50%. If you are trying to decide between the "Core i5" and "Core i3" I would recommend the Core i5 to gamers and people who run high end applications (like CAD software) and the Core i3 for people running business applications (like MS Office) and web browsing. If you want to know more read on. If nerd stuff bores you then just trust me, this is a great chip to have in your laptop.

Okay here is why the Core i5 is a big deal: The Core i5 (and Core i3) have Intel's newest, fastest and smallest CPU core (also known as the "Westmere" core) which is two generations newer than the "Penryn" core used in the Core2 line. Because with each generation the parts get smaller they get cheaper to make. Also with the Westmere core Intel has bundled the chipset and a new graphics chip onto one package which also reduces cost (and allows Intel to do some new and cool performance tricks). One thing the Core i3 and i5 have that Core2 does not is "hyperthreading." Hyperthreading is a feature that makes two CPUs act like four. To do this Intel has enabled each CPU core to act on two software threads at once. So the two CPU Core i5 is almost as good as a four CPU part for a lot less money and requiring a lot less power (there are a few four core mobile CPUs out there but the battery life is terrible and I don't recommend them). Hyperthreading is something that every user can benefit from: no more watching your computer slow to a crawl because your anti-virus kicked in. Windows 7 just dumps that off on a new thread and you keep humming along surfing the web or playing a game. The main difference between the Core i3 and i5 is that the Core i5 has "Turboboost" (which can speed up your CPU or the graphics chip as needed) and the Core i3 does not. If you aren't stressing the CPU or the graphics chip then the Turboboost found in the i5 isn't going to do a lot for you.

RAM - 4GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1066MHz is combined with a 64bit OS to which should provide more than enough memory for pretty much any application you can think of outside of extremely high end gaming. Note that most older notebooks come with "DDR2" and this one has "DDR3". The main difference is that "DDR3" uses about 20% less power "DDR2" which of course equals slightly better battery life.

HDD - The 500GB drive is far more space than most users need (few people will use more than 100GB). HP also offers 320GB and 640GB drives in some models. This one runs at 7200RPM but HP has version that run at 5400RPM. The 7200RPM drive offers better performance but the failure rate is slightly higher than the slower 5400RPM drives. I have a slight preference for the slower drive just because I hate HDD failures but honestly the 7200RPM drives have improved to the point where there's not much difference in failure rates anymore.

Graphics - This model is using uses Intel's new "HD" graphics which is vastly superior to their old "4500MHD" chip. You can actually do a some 3D gaming on this notebook though newer high-end 3D games will need to run at reduced settings. Online games like World of Warcraft will run best at reduced settings. It can do 1080p HD graphics but notice this model doesn't have a Blu-ray drive so I'm not sure it matters that much (the only DV6's I know of with Blu-ray are custom models ordered direct from HP).

Display - I don't like that about a year ago HP switched the DV6 from a full 16" display to the slightly smaller 15.6". Still the 1366 x 768 widescreen LED Brightview display on this model doesn't disappoint. Indoors it is brilliant with surprisingly strong blacks (too many notebook displays are all brightness with no depth). Outdoors you'll have some issues with glare but it's better than a lot of competitors. I like that the screen provides a decent amount of vertical space without overdoing it. The difference between the 15.6" and a 14" is surprising (go compare them in a store if you haven't had a chance).

Sound - Surprisingly good sound for a notebook. The speakers are well positioned and deliver a good range. I've heard better but it was on a $3K notebook.

Battery - HP bundles 12 cell Lithium-Ion battery on this model but most DV6 models have a 6 cell. If you are on the road a lot the 12 cell is nice. Home users who plan to plug in a lot probably won't care. Personally I prefer the 12 cell. The 6 cell will give you 2-4 hours of real use and the 12 cell will give you 3-6 hours (HP claims "up to seven hours" on their website but that's only if you do everything possible to conserve power). The 12 cell will bulge out a little in the back and adds about 1/5 of a pound to the weight.

Operating System - This model the "Premium" version of Windows 7. The "SB" (small business) models have the Win 7 "Professional" version. Win 7 premium is fine for most users but the Pro version lets you back up over a network and better support for older software (it can basically run Windows XP in the background for your older programs). Most homes users will be fine with Win 7 Premium but if you have a lot of old software you may consider getting a notebook with Win 7 Pro (which will add a little to the cost of the notebook).

Optical Drive: The standard HP DVD/CD RW Drive with Lightscribe. If you haven't used Lightscribe it basically allows you to burn black text or images onto LightScribe compatible CD or DVD media. A typical image burn takes 20 minutes or so. It's nice to have but be aware the images are a little dull. I've noticed mine fade over but I mostly burn copies of CDs for my kids and they are rough on them.

I don't have any serious "cons" for this computer. The "Touch Media Controls" for things like the volume (as opposed to buttons you push) are a little odd at first but we got used to them quickly and hey, they look cool when they light up. I also don't find the included remote to be that useful but anyone planning to hook this up to their TV might like it. I suspect most people will just put in a drawer and forget about it.

If you're staring at the various DV6 models trying to decide which one to buy my advice is (based on the models available when I wrote this):

- For home users who aren't gamers you can save about $100 if you go with the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop which combines a Core i3 with Win 7 Premium and a 6 cell battery. The performance for non-gaming software will be very close to the more expensive i5 models and you'll save money by going with Win 7 Premium and a smaller battery.

- If you need good battery life, run higher end software, or like to game a bit go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US which combines the Core i5 with the 12 cell battery. The Intel graphics aren't the best but it's a big improvement over past products. This is the model I think has the best balance of features.

- If gaming matters more than battery life you should probably look at other laptop lines but if you are sold on the DV6 go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2190US which has a quad CPU Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphics. It's only got a 6 cell battery and that CPU and graphics are going to drain it quickly. You'll pay about $200 over this model.

- If you have a lot of older software consider the HP Pavilion DV6-2157SB Small Business Editionwhich comes with Windows 7 Pro (which can run older software in a WinXP kernel). It has a Core i3 and a 6 cell battery. It also has a different finish ("Plaid Mocha") but I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it.

To wrap it all up: you can always buy more features for more money but if you are looking for a laptop with some higher-end features and upscale build quality this is an excellent choice. HP spent money in the right places and has created a high-end laptop at a mid-tier price. I think the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop is one of the better values out there today but I prefer the features offered in the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US. If you are a student you may want to check out HPs "Academy" program which offers student discounts (it can be hard to find on HP's web site - just search for "HP Academy").

Lowest Price ASUS U50Vg-AM1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I purchased the U50 not only for its good specs, but for its slick looks. In fact, I passed up similar machines simply because I didn't like the colors they came in. When the U50 arrived at my house, I opened the box expecting the beautiful black shown in the pictures. The beautiful black advertised in the product headline. Unfortunately, the machine that came out of the box is midnight blue with metallic sparkles. Might look good on a muscle car, but not so good on my laptop. When I called Amazon, they claimed they only stock the U50 in one color: black. Furthermore, Amazon's return policy on "open computers" only refunds 85 percent of the $1000 I paid. So, begrudgingly, I'm keeping this laptop. But I didn't get what I paid for and I won't be buying another computer from Amazon. If you're less superficial than me, I think you'll be happy with this machine--other than the color, it's really nice.Get more detail about ASUS U50Vg-AM1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Low Price Toshiba Satellite M505D-S4970 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

This laptop just arrive in my hands, and already identify 2 misleading things from amazon.
They say the computer has HDMI, well, the one that arrived didn't, has the port closed!!!
Also, it says that has the Backlit Keyboard, and is not true.

I will contact Amazon right away if they would ship something that actually has the complete specifications given.

If I don't update this, well you will know that if you want HDMI and backlit keyboard, not to buy it.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite M505D-S4970 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Save Acer AS8730-6951 18.4-Inch Laptop

I had purchased an Acer 15" AMD Athlon earlier this year to replace my Dell Vostro that over heated and shut down to often. I was very impressed by the 8 hr battery and how cool it ran. I figured the Toshiba satellite would be even better with the Intell processor and Toshiba quality. I replaced th Acer. My toshiba kicked the AMD on windows performance score but overheated. I sold it the second month I had it and went and reviewed the Acer brand again. This model had the Intel processor and 4 gig ram etc. I loved the thing for it ran well a few pauses etc this week. Today it would not boot tried various recovery techniques. None worked so far. I dont like buying a computer that does not have OS on CD or DVD etc. so I am mixed I will try another and see what happens.Get more detail about Acer AS8730-6951 18.4-Inch Laptop.

Discount Dell Latitude D610 Notebook PC (Off-Lease) - Intel Pentium M 1.86GHz, genuine Windows XP Home, 512MB DDR2, 40GB HDD, DVD/CDRW Combo

Cheap Toshiba Satellite M505-S4985-T 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 3 Hours 15 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I love everything this laptop has to offer. The ONLY thing I can say negative about it... because some days it drives me crazy.. is the fact that it's glossy all over...which leaves fingerprints and oily imprints all over where you touch.. easy fix though, just wipe down with a rag or papertowel. It's a touch-screen...in case, ya' missed that bit. I have only used the touch-screen a few times.. it's not needed...but it is neat. I've had the laptop for about a month now. The sound on this thing is great! Loud. One thing I've noticed about Toshiba's... they have descent sound. My last laptop was a Toshiba... lasted me a good 4yrs.. and probably would still be good... only I ruined it by taking it to Iraq with me years back.. so the cd/dvd area no longer works. Still have my old one though and use it for basic things like photo editing n such. Overall, I'd say this new laptop is kick@ss. The keys are quiet.. and I love Windows 7.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite M505-S4985-T 14.0-Inch Black/Onyx Laptop - 3 Hours 15 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Buy ASUS G51J-A1 15.6-Inch Blue Gaming Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

This laptop is cream of the crop, quality of build, components and style. There is only one downfall to this laptop and it is only because of the hardware power this laptop puts out. What else can you do when your have a gtx 260 and and icore processor, the battery is always gonna suck. Did buy the 9 cell battery for this laptop at a steal online and now i get a combined 5-6 hours on both batteries if needed! Great laptop, plays counterstike source at 200fps, modern warfare II runs like a champ, and crysis can actually be maxed out and runs very smooth, very suprised for a laptop of this price, when an alienware is double for changing lights and 2 more pounds of weight. Overall great gaming laptop, you wont be dissappointedGet more detail about ASUS G51J-A1 15.6-Inch Blue Gaming Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

HP Mini 1101 - Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 160 GB - GMA 950 - WLAN : 802.11b/g - Vista Home Basic - 10.1" Widescreen TFT 1024 x 576 - camera - Smart Buy - Microsoft Office Ready Review

One of our departments just bought a few of these and this is the first netbook I encountered without a glossy screen. Until now, many consumer laptops and all netbooks were on my you-know-what-list because of their highly reflective screens that make them look fancy, but also make them practically unusable in high light, and/or when you have a source of light behind you. HP Pavilion DV2-1110US 12.1-Inch Entertainment Laptop Top Quality

This is a good price BUT with one BIG CATCH! There's only one ram slot in this laptop and one 4 gig ram cost around $200. Not a good deal if u plan to upgrade the ram. From what I read this laptop runs slow if u go beyond emails, surfing....even streaming video is jerky without the additional ram. ASUS K61IC-A1 16-Inch Black Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Best Quality

I bought a Dell XPS M1530 November 2008 and it was subsequently stolen November of 2009. In my quest to replace my laptop I was stubborn & hesitant at first to stray from Dell having owned 3 laptops previously from them with no issues and nothing but excellent experience. I went shopping at a local Electronics retailer and stumbled upon this machine which is lesser known in the Southern US, however I have now learned they are the 3rd largest seller of laptop computers in the world and have won numerous awards. This machine is FAST it boots up to start menu in a mere 8 seconds flat which is impressive. Although there are faster machines out there, for the price of this one it is well worth it for under $1000. The screen picture is crisp as no other and is LED HD and has one of the best resolutions out there, great for movies and other video media. The internal sound card combined with alltec lansing speakers provide for an excellent sound also for music, etc. ALthough not as fancy to the eye or as gimicky as a Dell XPS this is as compatible as it gets and at a better price. also interesting is the 1yr warranty that protects you even from accidental dropping of the machine. 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, etc.Get more detail about ASUS K61IC-A1 16-Inch Black Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1120 LED TruBrite 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Right now

I feel as though my notebook has been stolen.Get more detail about Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1120 LED TruBrite 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black).
